As always, please reach out if you would like to contribute or have suggestions for future issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriela Ochoa (Editor)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"About_the_Cover\"><\/span>About the Cover<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The cover<\/strong>&nbsp;(by Alain Lioret, Kamal Hennou and Florentin Eraud, ESGI Digital Lab \/ Universit\u00e9 Paris 8, France, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-032-24350-8_19\">published at EvoMUSART 2026,<\/a> Best Poster Award), illustrates a&nbsp;<em>Quantum Portrait<\/em>&nbsp;generated by the&nbsp;<strong>Life Beings<\/strong>&nbsp;system, a self-organizing computational ecosystem combining quantum computing principles with artificial life paradigms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This artwork emerges from the&nbsp;<strong>Quantum Particulate Automata (QPA)<\/strong>&nbsp;framework, where autonomous particles traverse a toroidal grid of quantum-inspired gates \u2014 superposition, entanglement, teleportation, rotation, and decoherence \u2014 whose spatial arrangement is encoded as a genome and evolved through a genetic algorithm. Texture sampling from an input image guides color assignment, while quantum gate interactions govern the trajectory evolution of each particle. The resulting composition of interwoven, organic lines rendered via B\u00e9zier smoothing and velocity-based stroke width reflects the inherent unpredictability of quantum measurement: running the same simulation twice produces similar but never identical results, unlike deterministic classical systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dense arborescent forms, dark grounds, and luminous blue-grey filaments embody the project&#8217;s central concept of&nbsp;<strong>computational biopoetics<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 a living ecosystem where poetic emergence, artificial life, and quantum indeterminacy intertwine, creating aesthetic expressions that transcend what classical particle systems can generate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"23rd_Human-Competitive_Results_Awards_Humies_2026\"><\/span><strong>23<sup>rd<\/sup> Human-Competitive Results Awards (\u201cHumies\u201d), 2026<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;GECCO 2026 Conference was held July 13-17 this year, once again in hybrid mode.&nbsp; Around 400 people came to San Jos\u00e9, Costa Rica to attend in person, and an additional 200 or so registered to attend virtually.&nbsp; The finals of the Humies competition (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.human-competitive.org\">www.human-competitive.org<\/a> for the Call for Entries) was a plenary session on Wednesday, July 15, that was attended by about 75 people. The six finalists earlier selected by the judges (from among 9 entries this year, and based on the papers and entry forms they submitted) presented their work in 10-minute talks, or, in three cases, a pre-recorded video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:36% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"418\" height=\"274\" src=\"https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/humies-logo.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-407 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/humies-logo.png 418w, https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/humies-logo-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The Humies competition annually awards $10,000 in cash prizes for computational results that are deemed to be competitive with results produced by humans but are generated automatically by computers. The judges viewed all presentations and then held their deliberations to select the prize winners. All entries and the presentation materials of the six finalists are available to the general public at the Humies website&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.human-competitive.org\">www.human-competitive.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The competition, sponsored annually by John Koza (who is widely regarded as the \u201cFather of Genetic Programming\u201d) solicits papers published within the last year that describe work fulfilling one or more of eight criteria, including such features as winning a regulated competition against humans or other programs; producing results that are publishable in their own right, not because they were created by a computer program; patentability; and other criteria described in full on the Humies website. This year saw a tie for the Bronze Award.&nbsp; The Gold Award included US$5,000; the Silver Award $3,000, and the Bronze Awards, $1,000 each. The judges for the competition were Anne Auger, Wolfgang Banzhaf, Stephanie Forrest, Emma Hart, Lee Spector and Darrell Whitley. Publicity for the Humies was done by Bill Langdon. Complete lists of submitted materials are on the Humies website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A link to the video of the entire Humies session, hosted by Whova, which handled the on-line participation, is <a href=\"https:\/\/whova.com\/portal\/webapp\/CLaCF4Vax5Yr4znoFfNi\/Agenda\/4711408\">here<\/a> for those interested in watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As usual, after considering all of the entries, the judges wanted to give awards to many of them, but the final result was the following four awards:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gold Award<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gold, with a $5,000 prize, was awarded to the team from Google headed by (and presented by) Esteban Real, of Google DeepMind. Their paper was entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/html\/2312.08472v1\">AutoNumerics-Zero: Automated Discovery of State-of-the-Art Mathematical Functions<\/a>\u201d and has been unconditionally accepted for publication in ICML 2026. The authors show that transcendental functions, such as the exponential, can be approximated more efficiently by targeting only the finite precision required by modern computers rather than arbitrary mathematical accuracy. Using symbolic regression, an evolutionary algorithm discovers new combinations of basic arithmetic operations that optimize both accuracy and computational efficiency without relying on prior mathematical knowledge. Ever expect to calculate an exponential like this?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a long way from a Taylor series or any of the other classical approximations. But it\u2019s dramatically faster! It looks like a contribution that will spread very quickly in scientific applications using transcendental functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Silver Award<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:35% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"660\" height=\"724\" src=\"https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/silver.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1476 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/silver.png 660w, https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/silver-273x300.png 273w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The Silver Award and $3,000 went to a team which included Chao Qian (who presented), and fifteen co-authors, many from Nanjing University, but also University of Bristol, Hefei University of Technology, East China University of Technology, University College London, University of Zaragoza, and University of California Riverside. Their paper  entitled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-026-70541-w\">Complex marine ecological response during the Eocene-Oligocene revealed by global foraminiferal record<\/a>\u201d,  was published in the prestigious Nature Communications, vol. 17, article number 3954.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:44% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"775\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/silver_paper_img-775x1024.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1477 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/silver_paper_img-775x1024.webp 775w, https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/silver_paper_img-227x300.webp 227w, https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/silver_paper_img-768x1015.webp 768w, https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/silver_paper_img.webp 972w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 775px) 100vw, 775px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The study examines how marine foraminifera responded to the Eocene\u2013Oligocene transition, when Earth shifted from a greenhouse to an icehouse climate. Using an AI-inspired metaheuristic algorithm (CONOP.EA) employing a population, mutation, recombination and natural selection, the researchers reconstructed a high-resolution global history of species richness with an estimated temporal resolution of about 29,000 years. Their results show that different ecological groups of foraminifera responded in distinct ways, rather than experiencing a single, uniform extinction event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Figure<\/strong>. Nature Communications (Nat Commun) ISSN 2041-1723 (online).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Planktonic and shallow-water larger benthic foraminifera underwent major species losses with the formation of the Antarctic ice sheet, while deeper-water small benthic foraminifera initially remained resilient before declining later. Optim (TELO)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Their study presents an interpretable approach to vision-based sequential decision-making using Graph-based Genetic Programming (GGP) as an alternative to black-box deep reinforcement learning. Unlike neural network policies, GGP produces transparent computer code that can be directly examined and understood. The evolved circuits were validated on IBM&#8217;s 133-qubit Heron quantum processor and achieved substantially higher execution fidelities while dramatically reducing circuit depth and gate count compared with the canonical approach. Specifically, fidelities reached up to 96.9%, versus 66.3% for the standard implementation, with reductions of over 80% in circuit depth and over 77% in gate count. For most people in evolutionary computation, that somewhere is a PhD program. For me, it started in a robotics Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) in Ang Mo Kio Primary School and, a decade of curiosity later, led to a workshop paper at GECCO 2026 in San Jos\u00e9, Costa Rica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-e8f6fdc9-d577-4074-bfcf-45e5a9cecbe8\">This is the story of how a Differential Evolution algorithm and a lot of patient mentorship turned a schoolboy&#8217;s curiosity into a peer-reviewed paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-0a4b312e-e9d5-406a-8491-f065a0508789\">Where It Started<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-48eee884-365d-478b-aa96-00eeadab9f6e\">I&#8217;ve always liked finding new things and studying them in detail. That instinct showed up early, in the robotics CCA I joined in primary school, where my science teacher, Mr Riaz, first helped me turn curiosity into something closer to method. When I moved to high school and joined Raffles Institution, I threw myself into the Infocomm CCA and a string of robotics competitions \u2014 but underneath the competitions was always the same question: how does this actually work, under the hood?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-6fca284f-8d36-42bc-8c8a-9ad602b089e9\">That question eventually led me to an NTU-based research program, where I worked on defect detection in additive metal 3D printing using machine learning. It was there that I first met Dr. Anupam Trivedi from NUS, whom I began going to for advice. He knew I could code in Python, C, C#, and offered me a small assignment: help code a Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm for his research.<br>That assignment was my first real introduction to DE, and it stuck with me in a way I didn&#8217;t expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-122af510-beef-419a-b12a-9196e424f0cf\">Meeting the Founder of DE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-d75ceee8-addd-438f-b08a-731c5465f4ff\">The more I read into Differential Evolution, the more I wanted to understand where it came from. That&#8217;s how I learned DE was founded by Kenneth Price. On a trip to the US, I decided to reach out to him directly \u2014 and, to my surprise, he agreed to meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:37% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/de_founder.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1492 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/de_founder.jpg 512w, https:\/\/sigevo.hosting.acm.org\/public_html\/sigevolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/de_founder-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>We had lunch together and talked about DE for hours. Near the end of the conversation, he suggested I try writing a paper of my own. I went back to Dr. Anupam with the idea, and he agreed to support me on it.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-c9697974-d3c9-46e1-99e6-d4a77cb8d3e3\"><strong>Photo<\/strong>. <em>With Kenneth Price, founder of Differential Evolution<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-9c6d7da7-6784-47b8-8d94-4e096978810c\">Finding the Problem<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-770efd1d-6675-4619-8606-a83426e5318d\">Over the following months, I narrowed the idea down to a specific question: how well do existing DE algorithms handle stagnation,&nbsp; the point where a population of candidate solutions stops improving? I kept running the idea past Dr. Kenneth, who felt it was a strong candidate for a paper, and kept refining it with Dr. Anupam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-a6df1561-17c3-4e6f-881c-b4c2cb70ef0a\">I taught myself MATLAB, wrote the code, and just kept trying. Eventually, this became \u201cBehavioral Investigation on Stagnation Handling in Composite Differential Evolution for Constrained Optimization Problems\u201d \u2014 a behavioral study showing that the widely-used C\u00b2oDE algorithm&#8217;s global-restart strategy for escaping stagnation is, in practice, almost never triggered, and proposing a fix (SC\u00b2oDE) based on an individual-level, archive-driven replacement strategy instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-99ddb2f9-fd27-4b94-a535-83c50329c968\">What the Paper Found<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-dcc9627f-5610-4612-8852-6229c7f12f4c\">Differential Evolution (DE) is a simple but powerful optimization algorithm, and it&#8217;s used everywhere from energy scheduling to disaster-relief path planning. But like any search algorithm, it can get stuck \u2014 a state called stagnation, where the population of candidate solutions stops improving. Many DE variants have their own strategy for escaping this, but almost none of them check whether that strategy actually works in practice. That question \u2014 does the fix really do anything? \u2014 became the heart of my paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-85477f34-9160-4ce5-996c-8ba98520a999\">I focused on C\u00b2oDE, a well-regarded state-of-the-art DE variant for constrained optimization problems. Its stagnation strategy is a global restart: if the whole population collapses into an infeasible region with almost no diversity left, it wipes the population and starts over. On paper, that sounds reasonable. In practice, my analysis showed the restart condition is so strict that it almost never fires \u2014 across the CEC 2017\/18 benchmark suite, it stayed completely inert on 23 of 28 test functions. The algorithm was quietly stuck, generation after generation, with no mechanism ever stepping in to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-92e8cfae-1cc0-4cc0-9018-5d64e40a4441\">To show this, I didn&#8217;t just look at final results \u2014 I traced the algorithm&#8217;s behavior over time. I built stagnation heatmaps that plot every individual in the population against every generation, colored by how long each one had gone without improving. I used Average Infeasibility Success Rate (AISR) plots to track which individuals were part of the original population versus a restart, and whether the restarts actually succeeded. I also used Search Trajectory Networks (STNs) to visualize the search as a shared map, so I could see exactly where C\u00b2oDE&#8217;s trajectory got trapped in a stagnant cluster while an improved version escaped it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-27fd7f94-7642-4c49-ad01-690c75a900a0\">That improved version, which I called SC\u00b2oDE, replaces the global restart with a strategy adapted from UDE-III (the algorithm that won the CEC 2024 constrained optimization competition). Instead of wiping the whole population, SC\u00b2oDE tracks stagnation individual by individual, and when enough individuals have stalled, it swaps out just the stuck ones \u2014 using solutions from an archive of previously unsuccessful trial vectors. Rather than throwing that failed information away, it treats it as genetic memory: attempts that didn&#8217;t work before might still be useful for bridging the population toward a better region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-4a33bcec-718b-432d-a639-805d926868b9\">The results backed this up. Across 25 independent runs per problem on the CEC 2017\/18 suite, SC\u00b2oDE significantly outperformed the original C\u00b2oDE on 9 of 28 functions, with no significant losses, while remaining competitive on the rest \u2014 confirmed with Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. A Friedman test across three variants (SC\u00b2oDE, C\u00b2oDE, and C\u00b2oDE with its stagnation strategy switched off entirely) produced one of the more surprising findings of the paper: C\u00b2oDE with no stagnation handling at all ranked better than the original C\u00b2oDE with its restart mechanism turned on. In other words, a broken recovery strategy can be worse than no recovery strategy \u2014 because a bad global restart destroys convergence progress that the algorithm had already made. I also scaled the comparison up to 50-dimensional problems, which hadn&#8217;t been tested in the original literature, and found SC\u00b2oDE ahead on 11 of 28 functions there too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-6c113cdb-f75e-4b31-b5d4-0efa0a618eee\">The bigger point of the paper isn&#8217;t really about DE specifically \u2014 it&#8217;s that a lot of algorithm design in this field is presented as a \u201cblack box.\u201d Papers report that a new strategy improves performance, but rarely show why, or whether the improvement is actually coming from the mechanism the authors think it&#8217;s coming from. My hope is that this kind of behavioral, visual auditing \u2014 heatmaps, AISR plots, STNs \u2014 becomes a more normal part of how new algorithms get evaluated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-32273c99-b96a-42c9-ae2e-227d5710a6b9\">Rejection, and Rewriting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-d6b4bac4-52c6-412e-aabf-ea7f360de48c\">My first submission was to the IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation. It was rejected \u2014 but the reviewer&#8217;s comments were genuinely good. They told me something important: the idea, the content, and the work itself were novel and solid. What was missing was the language of research writing. Papers have a very specific style, and mine didn&#8217;t have it yet. That was a hard moment. What struck me most wasn&#8217;t the level of research on display \u2014 though that was extraordinary \u2014 but how humble and genuinely happy to help everyone was. I met leaders in the evolutionary computation field who took the time to talk with a high schooler like it was the most natural thing in the world. Over pieces of cake, students had the chance to get to know each other before the official start of the conference. The evening featured a quiz with fun facts about Toulouse, EvoStar, and evolutionary computation, followed by drinks and pizza.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>From our perspective, EvoStar felt like a welcoming and supportive place for students to meet their peers, build connections, share both achievements and challenges, and, most importantly, enjoy themselves together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div stages of their careers: Fangfang Zhang, Franz Rothlauf, Giorgia Nadizar, Nereida Rodr\u00edguez Fern\u00e1ndez, Penousal Machado, Yuri Lavinas and Jayant Sen Gupta (head of Airbus AI Research).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The panel covered a wide range of topics close to every PhD student&#8217;s heart: from navigating career doubts and paper rejections, to positioning evolutionary computation research in a funding landscape increasingly dominated by large language models and finding a healthy work-life balance in academia. A classified Monument Historique, the domain is an ensemble of 17th and 18th-century buildings surrounded by a 9-hectare French-style park, all overlooking the Garonne river, a truly special setting that brought students and professors together in a relaxed and elegant atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During the evening, Francisco Fern\u00e1ndez de Vega received the EvoStar Award for Outstanding Contribution to Evolutionary Computation in Europe 2026 and was officially welcomed into the Old Crocs group, a well-deserved recognition for his many years of dedication to the evolutionary computation community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As has become a beloved EvoStar tradition, the night ended on a high note with the EvoStar Choir, bringing everyone together for a rousing group sing-along. His research on embodied cognition, material evolution, and development has pushed the boundaries of what we consider &#8220;alive&#8221;, blurring the line between the biological and the artificial in ways that continue to inspire the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the SPECIES Society Annual General Meeting, the Executive Board was re-elected, and we were excited to welcome Sylvain Cussat-Blanc and Eric Medvet. On the other hand, we had to say goodbye to Sara Silva and Anik\u00f3 Ek\u00e1rt, a big thank you to both for their dedication and all they have contributed to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>City Tour<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the conference wrapped up, an optional guided city tour was offered for those wanting to explore more of Toulouse. Led by our very own local chair Dennis Wilson, the group departed at 15:15 from Gymnase Le Rempart, moving through UT Capitole&#8217;s Arsenal campus and the Clo\u00eetre des Chartreux courtyard before reaching the Basilique Saint-Sernin, one of Europe&#8217;s largest Romanesque churches and a landmark on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route, recognisable by its iconic octagonal bell tower. The goal is to collect links and metadata to help identify existing software and publications. For example, the optimization problem library already contains over 60 entries describing different problems, generators and suites. Using the provided metadata, you can easily filter for noisy, constrained, large-scale or multi-objective problems, and many more characteristics we store as metadata.
